Mycelial Endosymbiont
There are many mysteries on Pandora, but the newest and most shocking discovery is the ability of Pandora’s Mycorrhizae fungi, also known as mycelium, to colonize the body of a human host, causing radical biological changes. This fungus, found in the roots of Pandora’s interconnected network of plants, is responsible for carrying the chemical signals between trees that enable nutrient sharing, immune response, growth, and reproduction. Though the full scope of the changes to the human body is still unknown, cellular adaptations to the biology of the host enable them to breathe the air of Pandora without risk of asphyxiation, and stimulate the growth of a neural whip (Na’vi: kuru) from the base of the skull. The relationship between the mycelium and the host appears to be a symbiotic relationship — the mycelial endosymbiont keeping the host alive, and the host preserving the mycelium in return. RDA scientists are eager to understand this process, potentially paving the way for humanity to adapt to Pandora’s biosphere. Permanently.
