Unobtanium ore is a rare, precious material that originally drew humanity to establish a mining operation on Pandora. It is a “high-temperature” superconductor, valuable in applications such as Superluminal Communication, computer hyperchip manufacturing, and more. The ore is the backbone of Earth’s economy, with a single kilogram selling for $20 million.

The presence of Unobtanium creates some of the distinct geological features of Pandora’s wilderness- from the spectacular Hallelujah Mountains to the Spirit Cove of the Metkayina. These “flux concentrations” or “flux cons” typically appear at or near sites sacred to the Na’vi residents. Here, large rocks are suspended dramatically in midair by powerful magnetic forces from Pandora and its neighbor, Polyphemus.
