As an Art Director on the ‘Organics’ side of the Avatar Sequels, I help oversee the creation of all the elements that together make up the natural side of Pandora. This encompasses everything that you could imagine; from individual plants and creatures, to large natural environments. On a daily basis this translates to making sure that the designers have everything needed to brief our team of artists, and to ensure that design of various sets is up to date and has addressed any notes from James Cameron. I also look ahead to try and anticipate needs for future scenes and environments, so that we are always prepared.
Q&A
First job in film?
My first job in the film industry was as an art dept assistant on a movie called West Is West. It was a sequel to a popular British film called East Is East. We were filming in a village in the North-west of India and I wasn’t fluent in the local language. I was thrown into the scary chaos of a film set, and had to quickly figure it out.
Most exciting thing about working on the sequels?
On my first day, I was walked through our Art Dept gallery and showed the most incredible concept art for the Sequels. I was stunned at the promise of this fantastical world. It has been 3 years since then and every time I see a new scene or creature come alive on screen, I realize we are one step closer to that vision and to me, thats what is the most exciting thing; to see and be a part a world that comes together.
Most memorable thing from seeing Avatar in theatres?
I remember being so incredibly amazed with the world I saw, that it cemented my interest in the Art Dept and made me hope that someday I would be a part of a project like it!
What's a fun fact about yourself?
I spend so much of time in front of a screen and on a project that's constantly pushing the boundaries of technology. As fascinating and exciting as that is, in my time off I choose to practice a centuries old craft, Ceramics! I also love to hike and be outdoors.
