Kataru was a Sarentu nomad and the mother of Tamtey, a Na’vi warrior who rose to prominence while helping to resist the RDA’s efforts at industrialization on the Western Frontier. Prior to the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains, the RDA sought to abduct and raise Na’vi children in a residency school. The Sarentu Clan was suggested as an ideal target by Mokasa, the fearful leader of the Kame’tire Clan, due to its nomadic nature. They were ambushed during their nearby annual moot and wholly devastated by RDA mercenaries, including John Mercer and Angela Harding.

Several Sarentu youth were abducted during the attack, while Kataru and the remainder of the Sarentu were wiped out. Kataru’s children, Aha’ri and Tamtey, were among those taken into the Ambassador Program by the RDA and raised among humans.

The truth of the RDA’s actions would not be discovered for nearly fifteen years, when Tamtey traced their own history and discovered the bitter truth of the Kame’tire betrayal, and what happened to their mother and Clan. Kataru’s Songcord was retrieved from John Mercer by Tamtey, preserving her memory.
