Tattoos (Na’vi: tolu) are an important part of Reef Na’vi culture, marking different milestones or feats throughout a Na’vi’s life. The first tolu received occurs during the Coming of Age ceremony, in which a young Reef Na’vi will bond with their spirit brother or sister for the first time. This moment, which marks the first steps into adulthood, is commemorated with a tattoo on the side of the face. The Tulkun brother or sister is also marked in kind by Na’vi artists.

These tattoos are administered using a traditional stick and poke tattoo kit and fish-spine needle. The first tolu represents family and patronymic or matronymic names, as well as the name of the spirit brother or sister.
