Water Drum
A staple of Metkayina ceremonies, the Water Drum is a large nautiloid shell which is brought ashore to drain and capture air, before being submerged again. The Drum is then tethered to underwater mangrove roots or coral structures, preventing it from rising to the surface. The resulting air pocket allows a drummer to enter the shell and strike a wide membrane, creating a resonant pounding that can carry through the water. The Water Drum shares many similarities with a Terran taiko drum, and is most notably used in the Metkayina Coming of Age ceremony.
