On the Sully Family
There are complex depths to family experiences that movies and television simply don’t reach. With the Sully family, we are offered a glimpse into their private lives, approaching levels of vulnerabilities rarely seen, but nonetheless real. The Visual Dictionary allows for examination of some of the Sully family’s struggles and aims to identify the values they rely on to guide them through personal hardships and toward reconciliation together.

On the Factory Ship
The Factory Ship was a fun beast to design. A true industrial-scale tulkun harvesting platform, it can process six creatures simultaneously to the Sea Dragon’s one. It supports five independent hunting groups, totaling over 60 ocean vehicles, as well as a small wing of rotorcraft including the mighty Dragon. We leaned into a red oil rig color scheme to express the ship’s maritime prowess and lethal intent.

Dylan Cole, Production Designer
On the Wind Traders and Medusoids
From the first verbal descriptions I heard of the Wind Traders, I was dying to design them. How could one not be excited about a nomadic culture traveling the skies in a caravan of elaborate gondolas suspended beneath giant jellyfish-like gas bags? The fun challenge was taking this fantastical and romantic idea and then grounding it in the reality of our world and giving it a cultural and physical reality.
