BACKGROUND
Varang witnessed the volcano’s destruction firsthand in her youth as it destroyed her Hometree, clan and family. Her mother, the clan’s tsahìk (spiritual leader) was killed in the chaos. Determined to cast off weakness, Varang usurped her older sister to become the clan’s tsahìk. At 15 years old, she poisoned her father- the olo’eyktan- and took control of the clan.
As a tsahìk, Varang has a deep knowledge of herbalism that she leverages to terrorize and subdue her enemies through psychosomatic ritual, hypnosis and hallucinogenic medicine. She openly defies Eywa and takes twisted pleasure in seeing the deity and Her followers suffer at the hand of the Mangkwan. One of her most diabolical methods is by forcing tsaheylu, the bond, on another Na’vi- allowing her to dominate her captive and experience their suffering firsthand.
Always in the pursuit of power, Varang recognizes an opportunity in the RDA. When Colonel Miles Quaritch sought the Mangkwan clan after an encounter with them in the forest, she chose to ally with the RDA- gaining the weaponry and training needed to become the most feared clan on Pandora. Intelligent and studious, she quickly adapts to human technology- and the capacity for death and destruction that come with it.
In the Battle at the Cove of the Ancestors, despite overwhelming strength of arms, Varang comes face to face with the full fury of Eywa. She witnesses the deity’s response to the human incursion manifested in both the creatures of Pandora and in young Kiri Sully. Rattled and outmaneuvered, she flees the battle to ponder and regroup.
