Chiroptera
NarlukThe Chiroptera, or “Narluk” (without eyes), is a deadly aerial predator that dwells in the caves of the Clouded Spires region of the Western Frontier. This fearsome hunter is completely blind, but that does not diminish its danger. It hunts the prey of its home territory via a highly-evolved echolocation, the “barks” of which are capable of precisely identifying its quarry and even stunning and confusing them using subsonic frequencies.
As far as its physical appearance, the Chiroptera shares many similarities with the other flying predators of Pandora. It has 4, slender limbs which are webbed with membranes that create light, powerful wings. Each appendage is capped with a singular, hooked claw which allows it to cling to and climb the stone of its natural cave territory. Its head is eyeless, with two sets of ears and short antennae that extend forward from the crown of the skull.
Chiroptera nests are found deep within the cave systems, far from sunlight. It reproduces via egg-laying, which can sometimes produce hundreds of juveniles in a single season. Juvenile Chiroptera are more active, but less of a threat than their mature counterparts- preferring instead to alert the swarm of any impending threat via a shrill screech. When alerted, colonies of Chiroptera will quickly become active, with younger males creating a swarm to protect the matriarch of the colony and smaller, adult males engaging the threat directly.
The eggs in a Chiroptera nest are rarely retrieved, due to the danger posed to intrepid hunters in seeking them out, but their rarity and strong aroma make them a delicacy in Na’vi cooking.
