The flightless austrapede stands an impressive 13 ft (4 m) tall, but poses little threat to most creatures. Contrary to Pandora’s other bird-like fauna, the lofty austrapede’s wings have devolved into vestigial appendages—like those of a Terran emu. It flaps its wings when it is frightened. These peaceful creatures laze about the riverbeds and rivers of Pandora. There have been instances where a Na’vi has ridden an austrapede over wetland terrain in place of a direhorse mount.
